Off the Chair
Where are you from originally?
I'm Joel Valdez, born and raised in Kodiak, Alaska. My family is from the Philippines.
What brought you to Los Angeles?
I moved out here in 2015 after high school. I moved in with one of my best friends to his lola's (grandma's) house in LA. After high school he had plans to go to college and I tagged along for new opportunities. From watching a lot of barber YouTube videos, I knew LA had some of the best barber schools. I ended up attending Pro Barber College in Torrance.
What's the wildest haircut request you've ever received?
Probably pretty much half a haircut. One side was a skin fade and the other side was left alone.
What's your secret to getting clients to relax in the chair?
Usually haircuts are around 30 minutes, so I like to get the consultation down perfectly and repeat it back to them. That way they know I understand what they want and that I'm delivering the best haircut I can.
What's one product every guy should have in their routine?
Something basic and versatile, like a soft, light hair cream. A prestyler helps set the foundation, and then you can use your actual product to mold the style.
What's the easiest way for guys to keep their haircut looking fresh?
Sticking to a good schedule. If you have a scissor-length style, get a trim every one to two months. If you have a fade, freshen it up every couple weeks.
